electrick children

OMG IT WAS AMAZING, I SAW IT TWICE!

So now I've got that off my chest, what I really want to say next to Rebecca Thomas: more, MORE! Reading interviews Rebecca mentioned she has lots of crazy, staying up late pillow case kind of ideas for future films kinda like psychedelia style things and horror. It probably doesn't say that but thats how I read it, and thats why I'll be going to see them, because shes amazing.

So Electrick Children, woaaaah, all the way through you're unaware then BAM. It's just great, and Clyde, oh Clyde! Julia Garner is so great, my friend Kyle and I really want to know how old she is! We've tried so hard to find out, ahem googling on my phone on the bus ride back.... but to no avail!

I've not enjoyed a film like this since Submarine. It's just one of those movies I'd have on repeat for months, which is good for me as I usually have the same DVD on repeat for at least a couple of weeks, I don't know why.

Mr. Will, you're so cool. I'm not going to type a text heavy 'what i thought' review as you just need to go and see it. The second time I went to go and see it, with Kyle again as we seriously love this film, was for my birthday with my best friend Becky. It was in the Cornerhouse Manchester again but this time the room was sooo tiny, it was as like falling into the chairs as soon as the curtain was pulled back to enter. At work I was telling my manager and we both agreed how atmospheric it would be if people could still smoke inside, although we both agreed how much the smoke would actually antagonise our smoke-free lungs.

(watch the attached short clips of the film!)

Bassically the film is constructed beautifully. You genuinally believe Rachael is carrying the son of god. And all I have left to say is that I wanted to live by the sea before this movie.

You'll have the Nerves ringing in your ears for days. DVD please!

Street-style: Manchester, Northern Quarter

Other than this horrid cold I've been battling with, get the violins out, I've been very busy! I'm constantly writing which is a plus, I've gotten back into the habit of reading everything in sight and have been making the effort to setting aside some time with my beloved magazines, like I used to.

I've really missed reading ELLE like I did religiously when I was 14, usually in RE class (I got an A in RE class I'll have you know). I think there was something about coming to the capital, doing the course I've worked so hard to get on and at one of the best fashion schools in the world that was a little too much to adapt to in one go. However now I've passed my first term and already into the second, I feel like I can truely appreciate where I am, my family who support me and how much effort I put in. Its nice to appreciate things to look forward to whats ahead, hardwork will never be underestimated even if its only to satisfy myself. What I'm trying to say it's important not to give up or get lazy and expect everything handed to me.

I'm really looking forward to making a scrap book of all the exhibitions I visit like my friend does, its a good way of reflecting on what you might of seen especially as deadlines get closer. Its comforting to know theres life outside of Word documents.

Fashion week is here hurray! I'll be glued to my Blackberry and online streams this seasons, maybe next season I'll be lucky enough to experience it in person.

In other news, I was snapped on Oxford Street the other day after a Monday at uni, rummaging in the well stocked library in between my lectures, seminars and workshops. It was a great experience as the week before I was back home for the weekend and in Manchester photographing people in the Northern Quarter for my street style essay. So it was interesting to be on the receiving side! The photos were taken by David Nyanzi for Asos magazine so it was a nice start to my week, even with the cold at the time!

Here are a few of my images I took in Manchester's Northern Quarter:

I took these photos in a mission to find a trend to research and write about for an assignment this term. I really like the way these people carry different looks and play with accessories.

Everyone I took photos of in Manchester were so friendly. It was so nice to spend my weekend in my home town city where I used to spend every weekend growing up. Spending my weekends hanging out on Urbis gardens listening to music, back combing my hair and generally up keeping my image through fashion as a teen mosher/scene kid is such a past time for me.

So it's nice to still be able to come, hang out in town at the weekends in not only the coolest part of town, the Northern Quarter, but actually document the trends and Manchester's youth culture thats happening today.

Its nice to be able to progress as an individual and still feel apart of it.

I'm near to the full pace of deadline mania so I'm going to keep calm, stay moderately sane, work hard and try to have fun with my work that I love.

Happy belated Birthday Morrissey!

22nd May marks the birth date of Manchesters one and only Charming man, Morrissey. A musical wizard, a proud vegetarian and fashion hero - both boys and girls are inspired. Whether it's the jean roll up, the iconic quiff or thick rimmed glasses, hes there, what a ledge.

My friend EMMA allowed me to style her a a boy, hair an all, for my androgynous theme for the final A level Graphics project. She's been referred to as Frankie, from Skins, fair to much for her liking ever since.

My room is in the process of being made in to a grown up room starting with the bed, posh bedding and smooth furniture. This is my Smiths t if you haven't already noticed! As you can tell there is more work to be done such as cool wallpaper and grown up brown paints and alas no more spray painting or printing on my walls, it's for the best.

All credit goes to Opening Ceremony for their amazing love for the man, these amazing photos from Maryam L'Ange, Patrick O'Dell and Su Barber and Paul Sevigny, Ben Cho and Brian DeGraw amazing idea of holding, a now annual, Morrissey party, 'Night of a 1000 Morrisseys'.

My idol ChloĆ« Sevigny is a key player in this event and I imagine has been to every one since 2003. It's amazing to see that Morrissey and the The Smiths have had such huge impact overseas, they're lyrics just never tire and no matter how whiney some people may spit, they're beautiful and I happen to find their songs upbeat that speak to the soul you can't help but not dance too. I always request on the kareoke This Charming Man, it just has to be done.

My Smiths t I bought from Afflecks Palace in town, Manchester. I've worn it to college so many times I've really tried to not get lino printing ink or acrylic on Morrisseys' fod! I really love how you can see the Salford Lads Club in the background.

As I was in my room I thought I'd photograph some of the magazines I've got around my room. Some are very recent, June 2011s, where the Vogue is from 2008.The Dazed is exactly a year old. The May NYLON was with me at the time by the computer that's why it's not here!

The only designer piece I own! A real 80's vintage Givenchy jacket including shoulder pads. It's sooo big but I had to have it so I could wear it with a Morrissey style jean around Camden town!

Manchester Sample Sale

Manchester holds a Sample Sale on the last Saturday of every month. It's where young/established designers can sell their produce to spread the word and make some money. Everything is on discount and sometimes up to 80% so it's a very good place to shop for designer items such as Gio Goi that are not in the stores. Now Gio Goi isn't my cup of tea, although I'll admit I did own a t shirt many years ago, it was still cool to see their clothing mixed up with not so established brands such as Religion.

Every weekend in Manchester they hold a fashion market. Which consists of these cute marques you can wonder in and out of as you please. The owners are friendly and won't badger you into buying things.
Ahh now this is Afflecks Palace! It has been around since 1982 and I've been going since I was 12 so it's pretty special. A once haven to all moshers, a go to place for somewhere to shelter from the rain and then leave with about 12 badges that will probably fall off your bag as soon as you sprint for the bus home. It was some good times. Although they tried to knock it down a few years ago because it was falling apart, it was a safety hazard, but we protested and it hasn't. But because of this there are hardly any shops in there as all the good ones moved when they thought they were to be binned out and are no replaced with some still good but not the original stores. So it's not as fun. And I got shouted at for taking photos in there hence the lack of images. It's not that good anyway now so take that.

A newish venue which is opened at the side of Afflecks. Which I also got turned away from for Naboo, Mike Fielding's DJ set. That was a dark day.

This is to the side of Afflecks, if you can tell what it is please tell me I've been trying to figure it out myself for years.

They've updated their website loads since I last looked, you'll love it click here.

The signage to the Sample Sale below some pretencions bar.

There were a lot of maxis, florals, dip dyes and sequins. It was very high street but for a bargain who can complain. I didn't buy anything myself as everything was kinda samely but it was pretty lovely overall.
This brand Religion I am very interested in. There are plentiful strips for the men's and lots of rock n roll imagery for the girls. This brand really stood out in the dimly lit room in a good way. It was edgy and wearable in the casual sense.

My friend Kyle and I were wondering whether the above was for men or women so we decided men cos it was in the men's rack but I would wear this!

The white pattern was actually beaded onto and though I'm not sure what it's suppose to be it was made well and the jersey material was of an acceptable quality in my books. I have to have good jersey otherwise it just doesn't feel right. We'll talk about my polyester phobia another time.

The jewelery was my favourite part!

As you can see there was plenty of it. There was no real signage as too who designed each piece but there were staff on hand to ask. The long silver necklaces and the turquoise rings are what stood out for me. To layer a couple of silver necklaces and anything turquoise preferably a ring is such a simple summer look but always looks great. Its a good way of showing off you're personality in a dress or vest that sometimes I feel suffocated in. And I'm pretty obsessed with my turquoise ring I bought from Camden market!

Overall this sample sale is one of the many things Manchester has to offer in the Fashion community and I look forward to discovering more of them!

Liam Fray: The Courteeners

Liam Fray: The Courteeners

If you don't know who the luscious babe named Liam Fray is, now you do. With his Johnny Marr traditional Mancunian haircut, which is only rarely pulled off well, the Fray (Liam not the band) and the Courteeners (his band) are one of the best Manchester bands of today's rock/indie scene. I mean proper indie and notes of rock. What you would you call The Smiths or Joy Division genre, they were pretty rock n roll, minus the motorbikes and studs, the softer side of rock we called indie, but with shorter hair and better music than that say the kooks or the wombats.

It might just be me coming from such a scumbag city that I have therefore learnt, bit of psychology behaviourist for you there, that I am attracted to all bristl  lads things from the North West in clean gear (clothing). Or it just might be that we could mumble to one another and perfectly understand each other.

I'm asked far to many times to repeat myself when I go to London, haha I am very sorry. I drop my ts and if I can reduce the amount of times I open my mouth to talk, I will. I will also try and remember to refer to boys as boys, not lads. I say try. If you're familiar with Shameless I'm 20 minutes away from Gorton so life isn't to bad but I will guarantee that I will say 'do you know what I mean' at the end of eveything, I'll start every sentence with 'right' and say 'party' in a very funny, very catchy and very amazing way.

There are the glossy images above from photoshoots but I prefer mr Fray looking pretty gormless and nothing more than Northern. The photo below was at the GMEX gig in Manchester in December 2009 which I was at! Best gig I've been too. Back to the music.......

I must admit I've not been listening to their new stuff but I'm catching up on tumblr as I type. It turns out I have actually been listening to them all along just without realising it. They have a new sound and I like it. It's more softer than their original work but still as ever intelligently constructed, both lyrically and composed.

My mate Joseph has been to see them in the XFMs radio sets, or whatever it is I will have to ask him, won a chance to watch them play live in their London radio station then hang around with them in the after party. Theres like 20 people including the band and half of them work there, small crowd. Imagine sharing air.. never mind. So yeah he won it last year, and hes only gone and won it again for this year lucky sod. Very much doubt I'll be getting a plus one invite on that!

Photos from Joe and Sam thank youuuuuu

If you've not been intrigued by the Courteeners already or by this post go and listen to them now. I recommend Acrylic and Not Nineteen Forever just because they're lovely to listen too - see below!

What do you think of the Courteeners music? Have you heard of them before? Do you like his hair? Let me know..!
